Dental Implants

A Primer On Dental Implants

A dental implant is basically a substitute or replacement for a missing tooth’s root. It provides a stable foundation for the anchoring of a crown, bridge or denture. The actual Implants are small metal screws that are placed in the jaw bone at the site of the missing tooth/teeth.

After the implant has been left to heal and join to the bone, usually 3-6 months, the crown (visible tooth component) can then be placed on top of the implant. Implants can replace one or more teeth to support a bridge or denture.

Our Dental Implant Procedures

In our office the patient is referred to an implant specialist for the actual surgical placement of the implant. Between 3 and 6 months later, the patient returns to our office to have the crown placed on top of the implant. This process allows Dr. Campbell to ensure that the patient has the best cosmetic result.

Why are dental implants considered to be better than other tooth replacement options?

The dental implant

  • slows bone resorption (dissolving)
  • looks, feels and functions as natural teeth
  • does not require any treatment to neighboring teeth
  • increase tooth stability
  • increase the ability to bite and chew
  • help hold partials and dentures in place

Does all the treatment get done here?
No, we use specialists that have many years experience, to place the implant. Dr. Campbell is involved with the treatment planning, fabrication and attachment of the final restoration(s) to the implant.

What are the steps in having an implant placed and restored?
It can vary depending on the final treatment plan. Usually the patient is seen by us to discuss the feasibility of implants. Then the specialist is consulted to determine if the area to receive the implant(s) is acceptable. The implants are then placed. Once the specialist gives the OK for the restorations to be done, the final treatment is completed by Dr. Campbell.

Will I be without teeth very long?
Depending on where the implants are placed, many times a temporary appliance is not needed for the back of the mouth. In highly visible areas, a temporary appliance would be necessary and can usually be worn about 1-2 weeks after the implants are placed. There are very firm guidelines for the immediate care of implants, that ensure their success.

The final restorations, in some cases, can be placed as early as 6 weeks after placement of the implant.

How long will it last?
The long term studies look good, however, it is unrealistic to think any restoration will last forever. To date the failure rate of the implant itself is very low.

We feel very comfortable offering this service to our patients who want to replace missing teeth.
