ORAL SEDATION

The goal of sedation dentistry is to make sure you are completely comfortable. If you have been hiding your smile, putting up with pain or putting off going to the dentist, your life is about to change. New and safe oral sedation techniques mean you can have years of dental treatment done quickly with little or no discomfort. You’ll be sedated just enough to be unaware of the treatment, as if you were relaxing. When finished, you will feel refreshed with little or no memory of what was accomplished. Because you are completely comfortable, Dr. Campbell can do years of dental treatments in as little as one or two visits.

How does sedation dentistry work?

It really works! You really can relax through your dental appointment. It is safe! You take a small pill the night before your dental appointment. Your companion will accompany you to our office. By the time you arrive you may be starting to feel relaxed. When you arrive you will be escorted to a treatment room and you will be given another pill and  you will be covered with a nice warm blanket and placed on a monitor to watch your vital signs for about an hour, no intravenous tubes or needles in you arm. After you are comfortable Dr. Campbell will take care of your dental needs.

When your treatment is completed your companion will return you home to finish your comfortable relaxing day.

You will have little or no memory of the experience. You won’t remember any sounds or smells. You can relax for up to five to six hours after taking the pill. The time you are relaxing will depend on y our needed treatment. People who have difficulty getting numb will find that sedation dentistry eliminates this problem. Sedation dentistry is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long appointments

I.V. SEDATION (INTRA VENOUS SLEEP DENTISTRY)

I.V. Sedation
The goal of sedation or anaesthesia is to make sure you are comfortable. Some patients prefer to be completely asleep while others prefer only light sedation. Sedation dentistry is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long visits

The level of sedation from barely awake (Conscious Sedation) to completely asleep (I.V. Sedation) will be based on the patients medical history and treatment needs. Dr. Campbell can do all types of dental treatment from small to large cases while you are sedated.

I.V. Sedation is recommended for a wide variety of patients:

  • apprehensive adults
  • very young children with a lot of dental work to be done
  • children with special needs
  • adults with time restrictions and large treatment plans that would normally take many dental appointments
  • Anxious Adults with complicated medical history

Dr. Campbell will be performing the dental treatment in a special out-patient clinic in our building with Dr. Brian Chanpong performing the anaesthesia.

Brian Chanpong, DDS MSc (Dental Anesthesia) is a dental anesthetist who completed his undergraduate dental degree at the University of Southern California and a three year residency in general anesthesia at the University of Toronto. He is a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and a certified specialist (Ontario) in dental anesthesia. At the Faculty of Dentistry, UBC, he is the course director for local anesthesia and minimal sedation. Dr. Chanpong maintains an out-patient anesthesia clinic that provides general anaesthesia and sedation services for dentists. (www.chanpong.com)
